A Developmental and Vital Artery for the City of Duhok
The Semel – Seje Project is considered one of the most important strategic projects, forming a vital
artery that supports the urban and economic growth of the city of Duhok. It represents one of the city’s
main gateways, connecting it to neighboring vital areas. The project contributes to enhancing economic
development by facilitating trade and freight movement, strengthening social connectivity by reducing
distances between cities, and improving the efficiency and smooth flow of traffic.
The Semel – Seje Project represents a pivotal step in developing the road network and infrastructure of
Duhok, reflecting the company’s commitment to implementing high-quality projects based on the
latest engineering solutions. It contributes to supporting sustainable development, improving service
levels, and enhancing regional connectivity in a way that serves both present and future needs.
The project also provides modern and safe roads that serve residents and visitors to the city, reduce
traffic congestion, encourage investment in logistics and tourism sectors, and facilitate access to vital
services and facilities—positively impacting the overall quality of life in the city.
1) Project Components
The Semel – Seje Project consists of two main sections, designed in accordance with the latest
engineering and traffic standards:
First: Rehabilitation and Development of the Existing Entrance to Duhok
Zakho – Duhok Road
• Main road width: 60 meters
• Road length: 2.5 km
This section includes, in addition to the main road, two parallel service roads along its entire length.
These roads are intended to organize local and service vehicle movement and separate it from fast-
moving traffic, contributing to reduced congestion and enhanced safety and operational efficiency.
This section also includes the construction of three main interchange bridge:
• interchange bridge linking Zakho – Seje
• interchange bridge linking Seje – Duhok
• interchange bridge linking Semel – Zakho
The presence of these interchange bridge eliminated U-turns and at-grade intersections, replacing
them with safe engineering solutions. This significantly reduced traffic conflict points, lowered accident
rates, and ensured high traffic flow efficiency.
Second: Construction of a New Entrance to Duhok
Semel – Seje Road
From Semel to Tanhai Subdistrict Intersection:
• Main road width: 64 meters
• Road length: 3.6 km
From Tanhai Subdistrict Intersection to Seje Area:
• Main road width: 40 meters
• Road length: 2.4 km
The Semel – Tanhai Subdistrict Intersection road was designed to include, in addition to the main road,
two parallel service roads serving adjacent areas and ensuring separation between local traffic and
through traffic. This enhances traffic safety and improves flow efficiency.
This section includes two main interchange bridge:
• interchange bridge linking Tanhai Subdistrict Intersection – Semel
• interchange bridge linking Seje – Tanhai Subdistrict Intersection
These interchange bridge eliminated at-grade intersections and U-turns, reduced vehicle interference,
improved traffic safety levels, and ensured smooth and sustainable traffic flow along the entire route.
2) Infrastructure
The project includes the implementation of an integrated infrastructure system according to the highest
technical specifications, including:
Box Culverts
• Dimensions: (33)m, (3 × 2.5)m, (22.5)m
• Single-opening and double-opening
• Number: 5 culverts
• Total length: 7.1 km
Box culverts are used as underpasses in addition to their primary role in accommodating large volumes
of rainwater and improving drainage efficiency, ensuring road sustainability and protection against
flood risks.
Pipe Drainage Network
• Pipe diameters: 60 cm to 120 cm
• Total length: 15.5 km
This network aims to ensure effective and safe stormwater drainage and enhance the durability and
long-term stability of the road.
3) Traffic Safety and Aesthetic Aspects
The project includes:
• A comprehensive lighting system along the entire road
• All necessary traffic signals, signs, and guidance elements
• Urban landscaping works, including tree planting and greenery
These elements ensure the highest levels of traffic safety and add an aesthetic and civilized character
to the road, reflecting the urban development of the city of Duhok.
