The Lalish–Shekhan Road Project is a strategic infrastructure development implemented by NorthLight Living to improve safety, connectivity, and access for communities in the region. The road connects Lalish and Shekhan, making travel easier for Yezidi pilgrims visiting Lalish for religious activities, especially during peak seasons. It also links Khins, a key tourist destination, and Atrisha to Shekhan, supporting regional mobility and local development.
Project Background
Before reconstruction, the road was single-lane, causing heavy traffic congestion, frequent accidents, and difficult conditions during winter and religious events. The project was initiated following an announcement by the Prime Minister on 21 September 2024, as part of efforts to support the Yezidi community and improve essential infrastructure.
Scope & Specifications

The project spans 8.3 km with a width of 25.30 meters, redesigned into two lanes in each direction to enhance traffic flow and safety. Construction began on 22 September 2024, with completion by 20 September 2025. Up to 250 workers are engaged daily on the project.
Construction Approach
Maintaining traffic during construction was a key challenge. To ensure uninterrupted travel, temporary bypass roads were built every kilometer, allowing safe passage while work continued on the main road.
Quality & Durability
High standards are ensured through on-site laboratories and continuous testing. The road is built with three layers of asphalt, exceeding standard requirements to improve durability and long-term performance.

Impact
The project significantly improves road safety, travel efficiency, religious access, and tourism connectivity, delivering lasting benefits to local communities and the wider region.
